Platform / The Fleet

One assistant that can do everything is a liability with a personality.

A fleet of specialists, each allowed to do exactly one job, is an organisation. Usermode runs a governed workforce of named agents — each an orchestrator that delegates to capability-isolated sub-agents over MCP, engineers its own context, and remembers your business between runs.

The model

An orchestrator delegating to specialists

The fleet is not one model wearing many hats. Every agent is an orchestrator that breaks a job into steps and hands each step to a sub-agent built to do only that. Capability lives where the work does — and only there.

Each agent is an orchestrator

An agent does not hold every tool itself. It owns a job and a plan, then delegates the steps of that plan to sub-agents — each a separate MCP service with its own narrow remit.

Sub-agents are capability-isolated

A sub-agent is granted exactly the tools its step needs, and nothing else. The one that reads a hostile inbox cannot send. The one that drafts cannot spend. Blast radius stays small by construction.

They speak over MCP

Orchestrator and sub-agent communicate through the open Model Context Protocol — a stable tool contract, not a tangle of private calls. New capability is a new service on the bus, not a rewrite.

“One assistant that can do everything is a liability with a personality. A fleet of specialists, each allowed to do exactly one job, is an organisation.”

The roles

Twelve specialists. Nine functions. Diverse industries.

Each role is a transferable function — credit control, bid writing, compliance, business intelligence, support triage. The same function carries from property to industrial inspection by swapping the integrations behind it, not rebuilding the agent. These twelve run in production today.

Context engineering

Tokens are the new cloud bill

An autonomous fleet that runs all day lives or dies on what it carries into each model call. Usermode treats context as a budget to engineer, not an afterthought — so agents stay sharp and the running cost stays predictable.

What you put in the window is what you pay for. We engineer it like infrastructure, because it is.

A slim resident prompt

Every agent boots with the smallest standing context that lets it work. What it always needs stays resident; everything else is fetched only when the task calls for it.

Just-in-time shards

Knowledge is loaded on demand through a memory lookup, not pasted into every turn. The agent pulls the shard the step needs and leaves the rest on disk.

Prompt caching

Stable context is cached and reused across turns rather than re-billed each time. An eval asserts a cache-hit-ratio floor, so a change that quietly wrecks reuse fails the build.

Compaction

Long-running sessions are summarised and trimmed as they grow, so a conversation that spans a working day does not drag a full transcript through every model call.

Durable memory

Memory is the difference between a colleague and a calculator

A calculator gives the same answer every time and forgets you the moment you look away. A colleague remembers the last conversation. The fleet runs on a durable memory plane — shared across every agent, not a vector store bolted on the side — so it carries what it learns from one run to the next.

Three banks, one resolver

Memory is partitioned into three banks and routed by a bank resolver, so a lookup reaches the right scope and no wider.

  • PersonalWhat a single agent has learned doing its own job — the working knowledge of one role.
  • CorpusShared reference the fleet draws on — documents, precedents and reference data, retrievable on demand.
  • Org-canonicalThe facts your organisation treats as authoritative. Promotion into this bank is human-gated.

A governed plane, not a black box

Memory lives on a durable plane the fleet shares, with role-based access enforced at the plane itself. An agent reads and writes only the banks its role is permitted to touch — access is a property of the store, not a promise in the prompt.

RBAC enforced at the memory plane

Dreaming — nightly consolidation

Each night the fleet consolidates what it learned: summarise, rank, promote-with-review, trim. Nothing reaches canonical memory without a human, and every change is an auditable snapshot you can roll back.

  1. 01Summarise the day's interactions
  2. 02Rank what is worth keeping
  3. 03Promote only with human review
  4. 04Trim the rest, snapshot the change
